Phil Zimmermans company, Silent Circle is binning the standards that are brought forward by NIST. The reason is pretty simple really, he doesn’t trust the relationship between NIST and the NSA. The NSA have been implicated on numerous occasions trying to weaken encryption and hashing standards. Frankly, there is no telling how much damage have been done to standards like SHA-1 and AES-256, but if the NSA can install a backdoor, they will have. The recent revelation that SSL had been cracked would imply AES is toast. They intend to create their own standards.
