Look over your shoulder

A reasonably thought provoking article on the state of the poor in the US, and how the law enforcement agencies treat them. Don’t think for a second that this is not relevant here in New Zealand. One simple statistic should alarm. If you are Maori, male, and 33 years of age, there is a 50% likelihood of you having at least one conviction. Does that mean Maori men are criminals? Not likely. What is more likely, is that law enforcement is implemented along racial lines. So if you are unlucky enough to live in a poor area, for example South Auckland, you are statistically more likely to be either Maori or Pacific Islander. Little doubt Police target these areas, and anyone that fits a racial profile makes an easy target.
